Lifestyle modifications
Lifestyle modifications are the first and most effective line of treatment.
Dietary changes:
-
- High-fiber diet like whole food grains, vegetables
- Poultry and fish, and healthy fats like nuts and oilseeds.
- Low carbohydrates and sugar like white bread, pastries, sodas, and juices.
- Regular physical exercise: Regular moderate physical activity can improve insulin sensitivity and help regulate menstrual cycles.
- Stress management: Techniques like yoga, meditation, and deep breathing
Medications
Your doctor may prescribe medications to manage specific symptoms of PCOD.
- Hormonal birth control: Can regulate menstrual cycles, improve acne and unwanted hair growth.
- Metformin: Helps to improve insulin resistance. It can lower insulin and androgen levels, which may help regulate menstrual cycles.
- Anti-androgen medications: Like spironolactoctone help to reduce excess hair growth and acne.
- Fertility medications: For those who want to become pregnant, your doctor may prescribe medications to induce ovulation. These include:
- Clomiphene citrate: An oral anti-estrogen medication.
- Letrozole: An oral medication that can stimulate the ovaries.
- Gonadotropins: Hormone injections that stimulate the ovaries to release eggs.
