10 most common causes of redness of eyes

Redness of the eyes is caused by inflammation of the blood vessels on the surface of eyes.

  1. Pink Eye [ Conjunctivitis ] : It is an inflammation of the the clear membrane covering the whites of your eyes called conjunctiva. Its common causes are viral or bacterial infection. Allergies and irritants other less common causes.
  2. Allergies: to pollen, dust, and pet dander.
  3. Dry eye syndrome: When your eyes do not produce enough tears.
  4. Digital eye strain: Focusing on a computer, phone, or tablet for extended periods.
  5. Environmental irritants: like smoke, fumes, and pollutants can irritate the eyes. 
  6. Irritation by contact lenses
  7. Subconjunctival hemorrhage
  8. Blepharitis: This is an inflammation of the eyelids.
  9. Sleep deprivation: Lack of sleep.
  10. Eye injury 
 
When to see a doctor
Most causes of red eyes are benign and clear up on their own. However, you should consult eye specialist if you experience any of the following symptoms: 
  • Pain in the eye
  • Diminishing vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • A feeling that something is stuck in your eye
  • Eye discharge
  • Fever
  • Persistent redness
